Yoker bow out against cool sharp Harp

HANDS UP: Whe-Ho drew a blank
AFTER last year’s run to the quarter finals, Yoker bowed out of the Scottish Junior Cup early due to a mixture of bad luck and awful defending.
Jim George stuck with the same starting 11 that drew away to league favourites Lanark the previous week with Stewart Austin making the squad for the first time this season.
Yoker started brightly and Ryan Frew should have done better after making a superbly timed run into the box only to head straight at the visiting keeper from six yards after only a few minutes.
Billy McLafferty had the ball in the net after 12 minutes when he lobbed home after an excellent pass from skipper Scott McKay, but his celebrations were short lived courtesy of a dubious off side decision.
At this stage the Whe-Ho were the only team in the game and Kenny Meechan was virtually a spectator in the home goal but disaster struck on 26 minutes as Lochee took the lead via a well taken volley from a corner — the space afforded to the striker was uncharacteristic of the home side but full credit as he showed excellent technique.
Things got worse for Yoker when Colin Clark needlessly fouled wide on the visitors left and when the free-kick came into the box, Yoker failed to win either the first or second ball as Dailly tucked home a second for the visitors.
With strong words ringing in their ears, Yoker came out for the second half intent on getting the early goal that would have dragged them back into the match and had David Watt chosen to square to McLafferty then they may have found that goal but the big striker chose to go alone and in the end lost possession.
Yoker continued to pile forward with Kenny Murray and Boal having further efforts but those in the crowd were beginning to fear this would just be one of those days.
Derek Readie and Richie Smith replaced Sharkey and Frew as the Whe-Ho chased goals.
It was not to be and with five minutes to go, Gary Bissland was red carded for a late and high challenge on a visiting full-back.
With just seconds remaining, Lochee broke clear for a third after a terrible mix-up between McKay and Brian Smith at the back.
It was a disappointing result and not much of a performance either but many feel last year’s run in the cup hindered promotion hopes so hopefully Saturday’s result may be a blessing in disguise.
It is back to league business this week as Benburb visit Holm Park, kick-off 2pm.
Yoker Ath: Meechan, McKay, Murray, Clark (Boal), Sharkey (Readie), Frew (R.Smith), B.Smith, Marshall, Watt, McLafferty, Bissland. Not Used: Austin, Collins.
