BANKIES WIN BRINGS THE HOUSE DOWN
REPRIEVE: Stonehouse fend off another Bankies attack but in the end conceded six
Six of the best as Stonehouse crumble in the West of Scotland Cup
THE goals keep flying in for Budgie McGhie’s attack-minded side who demolished fancied Stonehouse with another fine display.
Bankies have now scored 18 goals in their last four games, advancing in the two main Junior Cup
competitions and remaining unbeaten in the league.
They started on the front foot at Tilework Park with James Lennox looking dangerous bursting forward from midfield.
But Stonehouse showed their quality by taking the lead with a quite stunning strike by James Moore who fired the ball into the top corner of Stefan Gonet’s goal from outside the box.
The lead lasted five minutes until David Carr
nodded home after his penalty for a foul on Martin McInnes was saved but sat up nicely on the rebound for a simple finish.
Lennox and midfield partner Ged Hoey then linked up well to get Paul Craig on the ball on the edge of the box.
The big striker did the rest, holding off a challenge, before curling a fine shot into the net to put the visitors ahead.
Just before the break the Bankies made it three in a great move that was started and finished by man of the match Lennox.
The former St Anthony’s man won the ball deep in his own half and after a sweeping move took the Bankies up the park, he was there to end it all with a low shot after a perfect knock down from Hoey.
There was no way back now for Violet and Clydebank made sure of marching through to round two with another three goals after the break.
Craig drilled past the keeper for his own second after great work from strike partner Carr before skipper Gordon Lappin curled a free kick high into the net.
The captain converted a penalty in the closing minutes after Mark Hailstones was felled in the box.
Violet’s Ian Smith completed the scoring in injury time after the referee somehow saw something illegal in a John Cunningham challenge.
Unfortunately the exchange of penalties happened just minutes after Carr was sent off for retaliating after being hacked down from the back by David Shannon.
Shannon received a red card too, but that was no consolation when Clydebank were told after the match that Carr would serve a three-match suspension.
Clydebank: Gonet, Allum, McInnes, Lennox, Cunningham, Friel, Craig, Lappin, Carr, Hoey, Sichi Subs used Hailstones (Craig) 66 mins, Docherty (Hoey) 72 mins, Soutar (Friel) 82 mins.
