Off to Oxford
By LORNA CAITENS
A BANKIE schoolboy is celebrating after landing a place at one of the country's most prestigious universities — Oxford.
Alex Li, 17, scored straight A's for three advanced higher subjects English, Biology and Chemistry, when he received his results last week.
The St Andrew's High pupil needed either an A or B result to secure his place with the nation's elite and he was over the moon when the results finally arrived.
Alex told the Post: `I was really happy to get the results. I didn't work really hard for the first few months, but then I ended up working towards it.
`I had applied to Glasgow, Edinburgh, UCL and Oxford just to see if I could get in. At that point I was just wondering if I should go to university this early because I thought I was a bit too immature.
`I was also a bit curious about Cambridge and Oxford because it was so hyped up by the press and when I went down to see the university it was a really nice place and looked like a really nice university to study at.
`I got the interview in December and went down to Oxford, then after the interview I got a letter to say what grades I needed. So I had known this for quite a while but knew I had to get the grades first.
`I was really surprised to get chosen.`
Alex, who also gained highers in Chemistry, English, Maths, Biology, and History last year, will start his course on October 1.
The 17-year-old from Drumry says he is looking forward to studying towards his three-year law degree and also getting the chance to leave home for the first time.
He said: `It was quite last minute as well to choose law as my degree. We are supposed to study every part of law and at the end of it you get to go in to a job in any area you want.
`My parents are really excited and I am quite excited about leaving home and being independent.`
