Flats blaze - family rescued
By Jamie Borthwick
FIREFIGHTERS rescued a family as flames ripped through their 10th storey home.
Six firemen tackled the high-rise blaze on Saturday.
One adult and two children were saved and rushed to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation.
Adam James, who witnessed the drama unfold at the flats in Kirkton Avenue, Knightswood, said: “The concierge called out the fire brigade and they were here very quickly.
“The firemen did a really great job — they were very quickly on the scene with hoses and equipment to help the residents and put out the fire.”
The 83-year-old told the Post how he thought a prank had been played when he went to check on the commotion happening outside his door.
Mr James added: “When I looked out through the peephole in the door I couldn’t see a thing.
“I honestly thought that some wee hoodlum had put a sticker over it but when I opened the door I realised.
“I couldn’t see a thing, the smoke was atrocious.
“I closed the door and had to lean out the window to breath clean air again.”
It is believed a number of other occupants were treated for smoke inhalation at the scene.
The block at 75 Kirkton Avenue has recently been repainted and had double glazing installed as part of ongoing regeneration.
A joint investigation is currently being carried out by Strathclyde fire and rescue and Strathclyde police.
