The Green Dream
By Andrew Gibson
AS a campaign in the area urges Bankies to be more environmentally aware, the leader of the council has been speaking of his Green Dream.
The Green Dream campaign will run over the next few weeks involving events, information and advice on how to cut down your ecological footprint.
And to show they mean business, West Dunbartonshire Council WDC) big wigs have signed a declaration pledging to go green.
Iain Robertson, council leader, and David McMillan, chief executive, vowed to put a plan in place that will reduce greenhouse gas emissions, incorporate climate change adaptation measures and improve staff awareness, when they put their names to the pledge.
In effect WDC has agreed to assess actions needed to deal with predicted climate change scenarios and work with communities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
The environmentally aware council leader told the Post: “The importance of looking after the world we live in can’t be underestimated.
“There is a lot people can do — I think the key phrase is many hands make light work.”
Iain is hopeful people will make those important small changes.
He said: “The vast majority of the light bulbs in my house are energy saving and I recycle my own cardboard and paper.
“I keep my own glass and take it down to the recycling depot.
“I’m cutting down on my car journeys and using the train to go to meetings in Glasgow.
“I have made a conscious effort to use my car less and recycle more.”
Councillor Craig McLaughlin, Finance convenor, is keen for people to investigate how they can reduce their ecological footprint.
He said: “Our ecological footprint considers how much land and sea are needed to feed us and provide all the energy, water and materials we use in our everyday lives. It also calculates the emissions generated from the oil, coal and gas we burn, and determines how much land is required to absorb our waste.
“With this information, we can judge how sustainable our lives are and what changes we need to make now and in the future to improve our quality of life.”
