Police warning after bogus callers dupe elderly women

TWO elderly women have been conned by callous bogus callers.

In the first incident, a rogue trader posing as a kitchen salesman stole an OAP’s purse after she let him into her home.

And just a week later, a pensioner was duped out of cash by bogus workmen who wanted £1,000 to paint her fence.

The 77-year-old woman was approached by a rogue trader at 6pm on Saturday May 3 asking if she wanted her fence painted.

The woman took up the offer and the man returned at 10.30am on Tuesday May 6, along with two others, to start the work.

However, shortly after starting, he knocked on the woman’s door and said he would need cash for more materials and asked her for £1,000.

The woman went to the bank, where concerned staff asked her why she needed the cash.

The bank clerk was wary about the work being done and advised the woman against withdrawing the cash.

However, the lady still took out £100 from her bank and gave the cash to the man, along with other savings she had within her home.

But the workmen never returned to finish the job in Hardgate’s Colbeggan Gardens, after getting the cash and the woman later found bank books and other personal items were missing from her home.

It is believed the men were using a red transit-style van, which had a roof rack.

The first man is described as having dark brown hair, being scruffy and unshaven and having a distinctive accent.

The second was aged between 40 and 50 and had fair hair, pale skin, was well built and of medium height.

The third conman also had short fair hair, was of medium build and had small eyes.

Clydebank police are warning residents to be on their guard against bogus callers and never to agree to work being done without getting a number of quotes.

Anyone wanting any advice can contact Clydebank police’s Community Safety department on 0141 532 3310.

The bogus caller who stole a purse from a elderly women’s house is also being hunted by police.

The incident took place at around 12.15pm on Tuesday April 29 at a house in Fulton Street, Temple.

The suspect is described as white, aged 30 to 35, 5ft 10in tall, of heavy build with dark brown curly hair.

He was wearing a thigh length reflective yellow jacket and dark trousers. Anyone with any information should contact West End police office on 0141 532 3500.
