Hopes for Wets to play canal festival
By Colin Hutton
AMBITIOUS plans for a canal festival are under way and Clydebank’s own Wet Wet Wet are top of the list for potential headliners.
The event — which will replace the popular Dalmuir Gala Day — is aiming to be bigger and better than its predecessor in a bid to get the crowds flocking to the impressively revamped canal-side.
After seven years of hosting the Gala Day in Dalmuir Park organisers say that the venue is too small and hope that moving the annual event to the canal can open up a host of new opportunities.
And in a bid to make the opening year a showstopper it is believed that organisers will make attempts to lure the famous Bankie foursome, the Wets, to front the main music stage.
Various events will be staged along the Forth and Clyde canal, including boat trips, a fun fair in the car park next to McMonagle’s chippy, and a band stand in Three Queens Square.
The popular charity stalls and community fundraisers that were regulars at the Dalmuir Park Gala Day will also be included.
Plans for the Clydebank Canal Festival — scheduled for July — are still at an early stage and organisers hope that it will grow in stature year by year.
A council spokesman said: “The grand plan is that if this event proves to be as successful as we think it could be, we could look at expanding the event down to the Bowling Harbour, possibly linking with the Bowling Gala Day.
“There would possibly be a series of canal activities and cycle path events.”
