BUSTLING: The Wednesday market is very popular with shoppers

A BUSTLING market is hoping to expand to two days a week.

Plans have been submitted to hold the popular Clydebank Market — which takes place in Three Queens Square — on a Saturday and Wednesday,

At present the market, which has been trading for more than 20 years, only operates on a Wednesday.

But after demand from traders and shoppers, the market operator has applied to set-up-shop on Saturdays as well.

Andy Burnett, of market operator Inshop, told the Post: “We decided to apply for permission to run the market on a Saturday basically because of supply and demand.

“The traders and members of the public both wanted another market day.”

Mr Burnett has submitted the plans to West Dunbartonshire Council’s (WDC) Planning department and is hoping to get the green light as soon as possible.

He said: “The Saturday market has potential to be even bigger — all the traders are interested in taking part.

“Hopefully we will get planning permission and we can start the market as soon as possible.”

Mr Burnett said there was plenty of room for expansion on the site and he was working closely with the council.

In August last year the market was on the brink of closure.

Traders were threatened with losing their livelihood and many of the stall workers frantically tried to find another operator after the previous one had left them in a dire situation.

Fortunately for the market, which sells everything from fruit and vegetables to kilts, In Shop Centres Ltd stepped in and took over the reigns.

An application has also been submitted for the continuation of the Yoker market in Holm Park. The current market operator’s licence is held by David Johnstone but expires at the end of the month. But Mr Johnstone’s son, Jordan Clark, hopes to take over the reigns and his application is currently being considered by WDC.
