Shipyard housing
By Andrea Fraser
PLANS for the eagerly awaited first homes on the former John Brown’s shipyard site have been put forward.
The £5.5m development will create 40 flats, which are to be for rented accommodation, as part of the regeneration of Clydebank’s waterfront.
Clydebank Housing Association (CHA) has submitted plans to West Dunbartonshire Council for the apartments on land in Cart Street and Atlas Street near to Clydebank College.
The waiting list for the desirable flat is open to all those aged 16 and over, regardless of where they are from.
But do not despair if you are hoping to buy property on the waterfront, as developments of properties to be sold on the open market will soon follow say regeneration chiefs.
If permission is granted for this first development, which is in partnership with Clydebank Re-built, it could be completed as soon as September 2009.
Sharon Keenan, depute director of CHA, said: “We are delighted to be providing these forty socially rented flats for our applicants who are in housing need and I’m sure they will satisfy in terms of standards, design and location.”
Bankies had a chance to see the plans in February as part of Clydebank Re-built’s exhibition in the Clydebank Shopping Centre
Ms Keenan added: “This exciting, high-profile development will be significantly located at the beginning of the Quayside Approach, immediately opposite the Clydebank College.
“So far, plans for the flats include a mix of one and two bedroom apartments, each enjoying west or south west facing aspects, generously proportioned balconies with glass curtain walling and a number of energy saving features.”
Plans for the project, designed by Elder & Canon Architects, will be funded by Communities Scotland and Clydebank Re-built.
A spokesman for Clydebank Re-built said: “We are project managing this new development and since it is the first new development of socially rented houses in Clydebank for many years it’s very exciting.
“There will be other housing developments on Queens Quay in the next few years which will transform the site.
“Hopefully building work will get under way in the autumn and will be completed a year from that point.”
The application is set to be decided by WDC planning chiefs in the next few months.
