We’re too sexy for our pipes

SUCCESS: Jason, pictured right, with drummer Brian

PIPERS Celtic Spirit are a hit all over the world — but the rockers hit a bum note with acid tongued judge Simon Cowell.

The band’s success has spiralled over the past year with a record deal on the cards as well as acclaimed performances on American television and in front of First Minister Alex Salmond.

But when Jason Prentice and Brian Kennedy turned up to audition at the Clyde Auditorium in front of a 2,000-strong crowd for hit show Britain’s Got Talent Cowell told them “you’ve got no sex appeal boys”.

The Yoker-based band was stunned to be knocked back by all three judges, especially when blonde beauty Amanda Holden admitted that she thought the pipes were “just like a noise”.

Jason, 29, told the Post: “On the weekend that we went for the Britain’s Got Talent audition we had done three shows in three nights to great acclaim.

“So we were really confident going to the audition but the wind was swiftly knocked out our sails.

“Before the show started we had an interview with Ant and Dec which was quite funny and when we walked out onto the stage we got a massive cheer from the crowd.

“But we didn’t even get to the end of the first four bars of our song before Simon Cowell buzzed us out.

“He seemed to quite like the act but felt it didn’t have a British-wide appeal.

“His main problem though was that he said we had no sex appeal.”

Brian, 35, added: “For Amanda Holden to turn round in Scotland and say that the pipes are just a noise was out of order.

“But that’s the way the cookie crumbles and we didn’t get through.

“And there’s plenty more happening with us at the moment.”

The boys recently performed to a host of famous faces — including Elaine C Smith and legendary shop steward Jimmy Reid — at the Scottish Independence Convention Burns Night.

And their performance went down so well that the group is now in the running to go to New York later this year to take part in the massive Tartan Day celebrations.

Jason said: “We are in to the last two acts who are in with a chance to go out to New York in April to represent Scotland in Tartan Week.

“And then in March Warner Bros is coming over here because they want to see us perform on our own turf.

“So it’s all looking good for the record deal because when we were in America last year they came to see us play on three separate occasions — so they must have liked us.

“Everything is going well just now and we can only hope it continues.”
