A FORMER Bankie has flown nearly 2,500 miles for haircuts after spotting an advert for the salon while reading the Clydebank Post — in Egypt.

Frustrated at not being able to find a decent Egyptian barber and suffering one too many bad hair days, Mark McGowan decided Dalmuir’s Juneils was the place for him.

Mark left Clydebank more than 11 years ago for the sunnier climes of Egypt to work for the United Nations.

But despite his distance from home, his aunt always made sure Mark was up-to-date with the area’s news and had a copy of the beloved Post sent out each week.

It was here that the catering manager spotted an advert for the newly-opened Juneils hair salon in Dumbarton Road and decided to go to them for a short back and sides.

Mark told the Post: “Before I came back on leave I noticed this advert about a new hairdressers just beside the Park Bar in Dalmuir and I decided to try it out.

“The Egyptians are useless at cutting hair, so there was nothing to lose.”

Mark first visited Juneils run by Neil and Julia McAlaney when he first arrived back in his hometown last month.

He says it is the best £5.90 he has ever spent, so much so that he came back three weeks later before heading back to his home in North Africa.

He said: “Hairdressers don’t usually slag hairdressers but when I first arrived Julia asked me who last cut my hair.

“I prefer woman cutting my hair because if you’re a stylist you do a better job.

“This is definitely the best haircut I have ever had.”

Mark says he now hopes to return to the Dalmuir salon the next time he comes to visit Clydebank.

Julia, stylist and manager at Juneils, added: “Since we have opened up we have had a lot of customers coming in from Bearsden and Helensburgh — a large range of places.

“But I can positively say that Mark is the furthest travelled to come all the way from Egypt to have his hair done.

“It was money well spent in the Post for my advert because it has got me a customer from Egypt.

“It’s exciting especially when he was coming that far.

“He has came in twice, once three weeks ago and again last week.

“I’m sure he will be a regular.”
